Interstate 95. South Carolina. October 2010.

Ballantyne Hotel. Charlotte, North Carolina. October 2010.

The highway offers a freedom unlike others -
windows down, stereo up, rest-stop beef jerky
rebellious cigarettes in the brand new rental car
you fly through the southern wilds, the forests of exotic billboards
discount explosives, alligators in glass tanks, peaches and pies
it's never enough
this hotel is an island and you walk its corridors silently
you order food and stare out the window at a deserted golf course
you wait for someone to call no one does
somehow even the bathroom seems perfectly symmetrical

tomorrow you'll be gone

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. October 2010.

Two rolling oceans, airplanes to both coasts
lucky, though you'll hardly forget which you love the most

back home the leaves have left the trees and the wood is stacked
you're on the beach in a pair of dress shoes
it's six in the morning
and it's like a movie with no sound

Reno, Nevada. September 2010.

Reno was like a hungover dream. I walked down empty streets, eerily quiet. People rubbed their eyes
and glanced around nervously as they made their morning exits from the casinos. The air was clear
and crisp and the mountains funneled whistling breezes over the abandoned motels and the bored
valets and a small group of middle-aged war protesters. A homeless woman with a messed up face
told me someone had thrown a glass ashtray at her and then asked me for a cigarette. I gave her a
dollar instead and she told me to keep my heart open. I climbed a dirt hill behind my hotel,
wandering up jeep trails to try and see the sunset. My shoes filled with dirt. As the sun went down all
was quiet; a couple in a pickup truck parked on the hill below me and sat there getting stoned. In the
morning I photographed a cosmetic dental clinic for work and went back to the airport, where people
played slots and stared into their phones. We flew out over the mountains and I took forgettable
pictures of them through the window of the airplane.

It's near the beginning when you disconnect, subconsciously at first
yawning miles across the sky
and of course it's only in the first few hotels you pretend you're someone else
order room service
you aren't even homesick, nor has it crossed your mind, not in these clean sheets
you aren't even confused yet

the long road ahead

 Savannah, Georgia. August 2010.

In August of 2010 I left New England and moved to Austin, Texas. As soon as I arrived I started traveling for work almost constantly.
This would last nearly two years before I got laid off. I went through three cameras (a perfect Rolleiflex, now broken,
a Mamiya that became too awkward and heavy to reasonably carry on,
and finally a solid and lovely Pentax K-1000) and filled a shoebox with exposed film,
almost all of it shot while on the road.

New Orleans, Louisiana. August 2010.

The development process is well underway. Today I began the daunting and tedious task of scanning the negatives.
It will be slow and sporadic, at least until I finish developing the film, but here are a couple of frames from the first
few rolls of film I shot en route from Chapel Hill to Austin. This is where I'll be posting the images as I scan them.
